Maintaining Discipline – A Key to Organisational Success

Maintaining discipline is one of the most important tasks for any organisation. While the HR department holds prime responsibility, it is not solely their job—because self-discipline plays a vital role in building a culture of discipline.

Challenges for SMEs and MSMEs

In small and medium-sized businesses, it is often challenging to ensure employees arrive on time or record their attendance regularly—even when they are top performers. Recently, I had a conversation with a team on the topic of coming to the office on time. They asked logical questions like: “What if we are late but still complete our total working hours?” and “If work is delivered on time, why does it matter?”

Why Discipline Matters Beyond Hours

We discussed that, as senior employees, their focus is on completing work on time and taking responsibility. However, punctuality is not just about working hours—it’s about discipline, both at an organisational and personal level. Being on time creates confidence, optimism, and builds habits that shape individual personality and organisational culture.

“It’s just a matter of a few minutes, but it creates the mindset and habit that builds both personality and organisational culture.”

Building an Excellent Culture

Creating an excellent culture is the responsibility of all employees, not just management or directors. Culture is formed by our behaviours, our beliefs, and our mindsets. Together, we create the culture of our organisation, and discipline is the foundation on which it stands.
